Portland State University offers various language courses throughout the academic year. Listed are the professors and instructors to contact and learn about their field of research. 

Chinese

The Department of World Languages and Literatures offers courses in Chinese language and literature leading to a Major and Minor in Chinese Language and Literature.  Chinese language courses are offered year round including the summer session.

Learn a language native to more people than any other on the planet. Explore a literary tradition that extends over three thousand years: from brilliant philosophical texts written millennia ago and achingly beautiful poetry of all ages, to contemporary novels of Nobel Prize laureates. We offer four years of instruction in both Chinese language and literature, a major and a minor.

Japanese

The Department of World Languages and Literatures offers courses in Japanese language and literature leading to a Major and Minor in Japanese Language and Literature.  Japanese language courses are offered year round including the summer session.

Expand your view by getting a taste of the nation that embraces ancient tradition and modern innovation! Learn Japanese through experience-focused language classes. Discover new ways to understand manga, literature, and even perform in world-renowned kabuki.

Programs offered: BS second language requirement, BA second language requirement, Minor, Major, MA second language requirement, MA in Japanese, MA in World Languages and Literatures primary or secondary language concentration and Certificate in Teaching Japanese as a Second Language. 

Japanese Capstone: The Japanese and Chinese Language Program for Elementary Students is a Senior Capstone class offered at PSU for students in a variety of majors. Students will work mainly with elementary school programs that offer Japanese and Chinese in the Portland area, by assisting a classroom teacher and developing teaching materials. Students will also work on promotion of second language education at the elementary level. The class itself will address various issues pertaining to second language learning and teaching, including multiple intelligences, Japanese/Chinese language/culture, and diversity.

Korean

We offer 1st and 2nd year Korean. In 1st year Korean, students gain basic proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and culture. The 2nd year level extends students' skills in these five areas. You'll learn high-frequency speech patterns and vocabulary for everyday social situations so you can communicate authentically in Korean language and culture.
