Message From the Dean
Welcome to the School of Social Work at Portland State University!
On behalf of Portland State University, welcome to the School of Social Work. I hope you take the time to get to know us and to engage with our community in a meaningful way. If you are new to the school, we welcome the opportunity for dialogue and if you are returning as an alum, student, or friend, I invite you to immerse yourself in our scholarship, research, teaching excellence and commitment to student success.
Our world-class faculty teach across four degree programs: Child, Youth, and Family Studies (CYFS), Bachelor of Social Work (BSW), Master of Social Work (MSW), and Ph.D. in Social Work and Social Research. We offer the largest MSW program in the state of Oregon, which includes options in Portland, Central Oregon, Eugene, Salem, and Southern Oregon, as well as online. Through our various institutes and centers, which include the Regional Research Institute and the Center for the Improvement of Child and Family Services, we are advancing scholarship and community-engaged research throughout the state of Oregon and the nation. Our School generates 24% of the research activity and funding at Portland State University, which strategically positions us as leaders in the study and advancement of key social conditions globally. The impact of our work is reflected in our academic mission and commitment to our community.
To be associated with the School of Social Work is to be part of a proud and rich legacy of individuals who have responded to critical social problems over the last five decades. My goal is to work side by side with all members of our School to create, support, and sustain a diverse, resilient community which strengthens our ability to address complex challenges. I hope to partner with you as we acknowledge the need for growth and recognize the strength found in diversity.
Whether you are a prospective student, current student, or alum, I encourage you to stay engaged with us, and to continue the vital work you do in your community.
Dean and Professor
